Do you have to like drag if you’re gay?

No. You don’t have to like drag if you’re gay. Some gay men like drag; many don’t.

Drag is a performance art where men dress up as an over-the-top stereotype of women or women dress up as an over-the-top stereotype of men, often taking on a persona to the same effect.

The type of drag that most people are familiar with today is Californian Drag. This is a type of drag that emphasises extremely sexualised outfits and dancing. Californian Drag artists will often sing songs or lip-sync to backing tracks. They typically perform in nightclubs.

This is different to British and Australian styles of drag, which tend to focus much more on comedy – drag is just a vehicle for comedy, rather than the main focus.

Drag is often associated with gay men. There are many gay men who are drag artists, and there are many gay men who enjoy watching drag, but not all do – many are indifferent to it. You do not have to have any interest in drag at all if you’re gay.
